Laraway Road

Laraway Road dates back to the early–mid 1800s, when it served as a vital transportation route for horse-drawn wagons. These wagons carried iron and stone from the quarries and ironworks in Joliet to nearby rail yards, where the materials were shipped across the country to help build America’s infrastructure and growing cities.

During World War II, Laraway Road took on renewed importance as a key connector to Route 66, used to transport equipment, personnel, and explosives to the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, where TNT and other munitions were produced for the war effort.

Bonus - The Old Plank Trail

it started as an old Indian trail and then a group of investors had a wookden planks laid down and turned it into a toll road. Then around the 1850s it was used for railroad tracks and in 1972 it was abandoned.

At ., oWe will pass over this trail multiple times on our tour and provide a close up view as we go through downtown Frankfort.

The Trolley Barn

Frankfort wasn’t just a railroad town — it was also served by an electric interurban trolley system in the early 1900s with smaller trolley car like electric trains using overhead electric lines.

The line ran from Joliet, Frankfort and Chicago.

The ONLY road tour in America where you can travel on 4 National Historic roads within 25 miles.
